You just woke up on this long awaited Monday morning and are getting ready for your first day at a new salon. You’re nervous, scared and don’t want to screw up. Let’s face it. Starting a new job stinks. But, it only will take a few weeks for you to feel at home. We’ve got some survival tips so your first day doesn’t stink too much. Everyone feels the same way you do on their first of a new job but you actually did the hard part already. You survived the job market and got the job! Here are some tips for surviving your first day at work.
Before the Big Day
Get plenty of rest. Try to go to bed early. You don’t want to show up on your first day with puffy eyes and in your PJs.
Get yourself ready. Pick out a fabulous yet professional outfit the night before and apply some minimal makeup. Start your day with a cup of coffee. Until you learn the atmosphere of your new job, bringing in a gallon of black coffee on your first day may be a mistake.
Eat breakfast. Your mom always told you breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and she was right.
Starting a New Job
Introduce yourself. Introduce yourself to everyone there. Chances are, you only interviewed with one or two people for the job so introduce yourself and get everyone’s name. To remember everyone’s name, after they say it, repeat it yourself. It will help you remember if you say it too.
Offer your new coworkers to try your services. This will give them a chance to see what you can do and a chance for you to show off your skills.
Make friends with the receptionist. She will be your go-to person with questions.
Scout everything out. When you get there, be sure to locate where everything is like towels, the sink or where beverages are served.
Get into a routine. Set up your station like you did at the last salon. You may be bringing past clients with you so get them comfy and into a routine, just like in your old salon.
Listen and do as you’re told when starting a new job. It’s your first day on the job. Don’t walk in there like you own the place. Listen to your boss and coworkers. Once you’ve been there long enough, you will have more freedom. If you get there and see that their waiting area isn’t as welcoming or clean as your last salon, make that suggestion at a later date.
Don’t compare your old job to this new job. That’s a very important rule. Trust us, bosses don’t like that.
Be honest. If you don’t know something or have a question, ask; no matter how stupid it may sound. It’s better to ask then screw up later.
Show that you are a team player. If you see your coworkers cleaning, head over there (if you aren’t busy) and help out.
Try to have fun. Work should be professional yes but it should be fun too. During lunch or a lull in the action, get to know your coworkers, smile, ask questions about them and just have fun.
