Black Lines in Fingernails

Experts say that if you want a good indication of someone’s health, look at their nails. And you do…all day! Do you notice a thin, vertical black line across your client’s nail bed? Well it could be a sign of something serious. In most cases, sources say this line appears on the big toe or thumb. Experts also say that if the line is wider near the cuticle than it is near the tip that is especially worrisome. What could it mean?

It could indicate skin cancer like Melanoma, one of the deadliest forms of cancer. It could also just indicate an injury but if your clients head to the dermatologist, they can do a biopsy to find out.

What else could it mean?

  • A sign of aging.
  • Nutritional deficiencies such as iron, zinc or biotin.
  • Internal bleeding.
  • Fungal infection.
  • Heart valve infection.

Just explain to your clients that you recommend they see a doctor about it. They won’t be offended, they will feel special knowing that you care!

Other Nail Disorders to Look Out For

Very pale nails: Could indicate that someone has anemia or liver disease. People who are malnourished might have pale nails.

White nails: If your client has nails that are mostly white, it might be a sign of hepatitis.

Nails with a blue tint: This can indicate pneumonia.
